Advising non-profits on board development and governance

Kim Chirls Consulting

I bring extensive corporate and project management experience, as well as nonprofit board leadership and operations excellence to the nonprofit sector. I work with clients on strategic and project planning to break down big goals into action plans that deliver outcomes.

As Board Chair of the National Institute for Reproductive Health Action Fund during its capacity building phase as a newly independent c(4) national nonprofit, along with its sister c(3) organization, I led a board development program that included building geographic and racial diversity on the board, creating new communication and engagement vehicles, and incorporating new organizational structures.

I welcome the opportunity to work with you to advance your non-profit’s mission and strengthen your organization for the long term.

Kim combines her strong strategic planning and process skills from the corporate sector with her passion and expertise in the non-profit realm, consistently and vitally bringing both to our organization.  She prioritizes good governance and equitable practices, and has the ability to lead the team where we need to go while teaching us how to get there too. Her significant commitment of time and expertise has been vital to our non-profit’s smart growth as a start-up

Kim provided invaluable insight and assistance at a critical time for our non-profit.  As president of the Board, I relied on Kim to help me navigate the difficult transition from the organization's founder to a new executive director.  This was a situation that was fraught with tension and Kim provided expert guidance as we put a new team in place to lead the organization while maintaining our current donor base.  Thanks to her help, we accomplished a smooth transition without any interruptions in operations.  Kim's extensive experience and steady hand enabled us to move forward with confidence.  She continued to be a resource and was always receptive and accessible.

Former Board Chair of abortion provider and advocacy organization

“As we approached the four year anniversary of our documentary, If They Had Known, we recognized it was time to rethink and refresh our branding and marketing, and create a strategic plan for the future. Our goal was to build upon our current branding but evolve it in a way that would bring new energy and awareness to our film. From the start, the genuine interest that Curry and Chirls showed in our work and their desire to help us reach our goals was evident. They approached our project with passion and energy and took the time to understand our story. In addition to Alison and Kim’s talents, they also employed a group of talented professionals with specific skills needed to lead us through the creative process. With their expertise and guidance, we have a beautiful new brand and a strategic plan that focuses and optimizes our resources.”

“In my nearly 20-year career at Thomson Reuters, there was no one more effective at aligning teams around complex strategic goals and ensuring they were consistently delivering value than Kim. Even on some of the larger projects with multiple, distributed teams, Kim always managed to keep everyone communicating effectively to ensure that incremental outcomes had been identified, commitments were being met and stakeholders were kept informed of any potential risks or milestones. Kim's reputation for getting things done was well deserved, and there was a pervasive sentiment throughout the organization that working on one of her projects meant that you had been afforded an opportunity to experience success, not only from a project perspective but also as part of a happy, highly functional team. Kim's ability to keep her teams working together, aligned on its goals, and laser focused on delivering value was invariably instrumental to the organization's success.”
